Dave Grohl has been urged to write some "silly" songs for the new Foo Fighters album.

The band's bassist, Nate Mendel, requested the group's frontman drop weighty lyrical themes for some of the songs on their seventh album, which they are currently recording in Dave's garage in Los Angeles.

Dave said: "At one point Nate sent me an email, and said, 'I really like it when you write songs that are silly and mean nothing, too."

Referring to John Lennon's peace anthem, he added: "You don't have to try and write 'Imagine' every time you sit down with a pen and paper."

Dave - who is in the band with Nate, guitarists Chris Shifflet and Pat Smear and drummer Taylor Hawkins - also said their producer, Butch Vig, is rejecting ideas for the album which he doesn't think are "heavy enough".

He added to NME magazine: "When we were demoing, we came up with all this heavy s**t so I said in an interview 'this is going to be our heaviest record yet'.

"Butch saw it and then when I'd approach him with a new song idea, he'd say, 'This doesn't rock enough, no. Next' I'd have to show him another one."

Track titles confirmed for the album include 'A Matter', 'These Days' and 'Miss The Misery' and the record is scheduled for release next year.

Foo Fighters will be playing the Milton Keynes Bowl in England on July2 and 3 next year.

UK Fans can register for priority tickets by texting FOO to 2020 from a mobile on the O2 network.
