Crescent instrument for University of Edinburgh collection
Visitors to the Collection of Historic Musical Instruments at the Scottish university will now be able to see the items donated by Susan Tomes.
Among them is a bell-covered and possibly French instrument. Made partly of brass, it is called a Turkish Crescent.
Along with 35 other donated instruments, it will also be the subject of research at the University.
It features a metallic crescent moon shaped section, decked with two different sorts of bell at the top of a wooden handle, rather like a chair or table leg.
Above this is a sphere, and above that a 'Chinese hat' section, again with bells hanging from it. Sitting atop the slim, tall instrument is a metal eagle.
It features 28 small bells in total so should produce quite a sound when played!
