Craig David inspired by young talent
Posted on 11th Mar 2010 10:00 to category Band / Celebrity News
Craig David is planning a huge comeback, inspired by the new crop of young R 'n' B artists.
The 'What's Your Flavour?' singer said he was inspired to reinvent himself for his forthcoming fifth album by watching artists such as Jay Sean and Chipmunk and following their journey from the underground to the mainstream.
Craig, 28, said: "I've loved watching how Chipmunk, Jay, Tinie Tempah, Skepta and Kano's perseverance has paid off and how they've gone from underground to mainstream.
"The scene is blowing up right now."
He also told how proud he was to receive credit from younger artists for his debut single 'Re-Rewind', with at Artful Dodger in 1999, which brought the UK garage genre to a mainstream audience.
He added: "When I started out with Artful Dodger we were defining this new cross between MC and rapper, so when those guys say: 'You paved the way,' that's really cool. It's great to feel respect and positivity from those guys."
Craig's new album, 'Signed Sealed Delivered' is a mix of new songs, including first single 'One More Lie', and Motown covers, which Craig said gave him a newfound respect for the artists behind the original tracks.
He explained: "My intention was to sing the songs exactly as the original artists had, no styling around, no lowering of keys, no cheating.
"I wanted to hit every note Stevie Wonder did. If you like my voice and you like these songs, you're going to like the album. Recording it gave me a new-found respect for the artists."
'Signed Sealed Delivered' is released on Monday (15.03.10).
