Children 'should have access to quality musical instruments'

Access to musical instruments should be part of a child's experience at school, it has been suggested.
Great deals on musical instruments

Schoolchildren should be given the opportunity to play good-quality musical instruments on a regular basis.

This is the view of Paul McManus, chief executive officer of the Music Industries Association (MIA), who praised the findings of the recent Henley Review into music education.

He said he was encouraged to see it recommends maintaining music's place in the national curriculum, as well as the statutory entitlement for youngsters to learn musical instruments.

Mr McManus added that he is also pleased with the positive stance towards music that has been adopted by secretary of state for education Michael Gove.

He went on to state that the MIA is prepared to offer its backing to help achieve the various aims of the Henley Review.

"In particular, the MIA notes the specific recommendation concerning the future purchase of instruments and we stand ready to assist in ensuring that children have access to appropriate, quality musical instruments," the executive said.

According to a recent study carried out by Long Island University researchers in the US, playing a musical instrument may help to improve academic performance.

It found children who had regular piano lessons were more likely to do well on vocabulary tests, reported Men's Health.
