The Philharmonia Orchestra, based in London, has commissioned research to find out where the musicians of tomorrow may come from.

The research revealed that children today are 80% more likely to learn an musical instrument than their parents were at young age.

The survey, carried out by YouGov on behalf of the Philharmonia on the occasion of the launch of the iOrchestra initiative for music education in the South West of England, found that the top three most popular instruments to learn for children were recorder, guitar and piano.

Geographically, the saxophone is most popular in the North East of England, with percussion being favoured in Scotland and violin in Wales. The violin is the most popular orchestral instrument in the UK according to this research.

The difference between the number of boys and girls learning instruments varies but only slightly, with 71% of girls likely to pick up an instrument and 66% of boys.
