Cello player likes to break the rules

Maya Beiser is not like any other cello player you'll ever meet – she's rock and roll.
Adding something new to cello music
Cello player Maya Beiser has spoken out about the classical music world's austerity when it comes to performances.

Beiser, seen as one of the greatest cello innovators in recent times, is not your typical classical musician.

If she wants to go barefoot on stage, then she will happily do so, regardless of what other people think, she told the Advocate.

"I was performing as a child in a very conservative classical environment, and I said, 'I'll wear that dress, but I want to go barefoot on stage, would that be OK?'

"Of course, no one thought it was OK. But I ended up going barefoot and that picture made the newspapers. It was an early indication of things to come."

Beiser, who has been honing her skills on the instrument from the age of six, went on discuss her dissatisfaction with the classical world's unwillingness to break free of its rigid constraints.

"Somehow there was this austerity that was always associated with classical music presentation," she told the news provider.

"You're not really supposed to do anything, just wear your black suit and go on stage. That just never really jibed with me."

In other news 2Cellos, the equally creative classical music force, have been snapped up by Sony after their YouTube video went viral.
