Celebrate the World Cup with Brazilian Samba!
We're now well and truly into the World Cup and the Latin rhythms have been flowing at many a World Cup party!

The music of Brazil incorporates influences from both Europe and Africa. The most well known Brazilian music forms tend to be Samba and Bossa Nova - perfect carnival music.

Here's our guide to achieving that Brazilian party atmosphere! If you fancy adding some genuine Brazilian Samba rhythm to your World Cup gathering the following instruments will get you started.

Agogos - one of the oldest Samba instruments around. This bell adds a high pitched, bright ring and is easy to play.

Cuicas - ideal for street parties and celebrations these drums are lightweight and portable.

Tamborims - a small, round frame drum with a tightly tuned head giving a high, sharp sound with minimum sustain. Play it with a beater, your fingers or a flexible nylon thread bind.

Rocars - pairs of solid jingles mounted above a wooden bar which is then shaken above the head to create a full, rich sound.

Surdos - a large bass drum that fills out the lower parts. Worn from a waist belt or shoulder strap these drums can be as large as 29" diameter.

Guiros - an open ended, hollow instrument with notches in one side. This percussion piece is played by rubbing a stick along the notches to produce a ratchety type sound.

Pandeiro - a very common instrument in Brazil, this tunable drum contains cupped jingles which produce a crisp and dry sound. Shake, roll or beat the drum to produce a full range of sounds.

Other instruments sometimes used in Samba include classical guitars, banjos, keyboards and brass.
