Brief Encounter theme a top piano number
The theme tune to Brief Encounter, better known to piano players as Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No 2, has been voted the nation's favourite piece of classical music.
The piece topped a Classic FM poll, beating Vaughan Williams' lighter The Lark Ascending, which took second place.
Darren Henley, the managing director of Classic FM, told the Telegraph: "It is the epitome of both the Romantic movement as well as being a truly romantic piece of music. For me, it's the greatest piano concerto ever written, with an amazing melody that lodges in your brain for days and days. It is just achingly beautiful."
Vaughn Williams' Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis completed the top three.
Child prodigy Mozart had the most pieces featured in the top 300, with his Clarinet Concerto claiming the fifth spot and 20 of his works featuring.
Beethoven featured on the list three times, peaking at fourth with Piano Concerto No 5.
Edward Elgar made two appearances in the top ten, with his Enigma Variations and Cello Concerto ranking seventh and eighth respectively.
Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No 2 has previously topped the annual Classic FM poll, as has The Lark Ascending.
