Boris Johnson launches music education fund

A new scheme designed to encourage youngsters in London to pick up a musical instrument has been launched by mayor of London Boris Johnson.
More than £250,000 is being invested into the capital's music education strategy, with money being directed towards building links between orchestras and local authority music services.
The two-year programme has been praised by Ayanna Witter-Johnson, a 24-year-old composer, jazz vocalist, cello and piano player, who is the Southbank's Emerging Artist in Residence.
"Everyone should be given the opportunity to learn an instrument so that they too may imagine a better world and acquire the skills to create and contribute to it," she said.
Last month, three young musicians were awarded £2,000 each by Yamaha to further their musical development.
Violin player Jiafeng Chen and Mikhail Nemtsov and Yoshika Masuda, who both play the cello, were given the grant after being named as the top three performers in the Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe Scholarship Awards, reported Mi-Pro.
