Bob Dylan turns 70
Bob Dylan, the great American singer-songwriter and guitar player, has turned 70 today.
With a music career now spanning 50 years, the musician has seen and been part of history itself.
Typical of this are his classic songs Blowin' in The Wind and The Times They Are a-Changin', which were produced and released during 60s America.
They became anthems for the civil rights movement.
Although typically known as a folk musician, Dylan's range has been much greater than that genre alone, and he has touched upon the sounds of blues, rock, gospel and even country music in his entire body of work which stretches to a massive 34 studio albums.
Such was the influence of Dylan as a musician that by simply switching from an acoustic guitar to an electric guitar at a festival in 1965, he created a huge uproar.
Of his contribution to music and the arts, Paul Nelson, in the Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock & Roll, wrote: "The world used to follow him around, just waiting for him to drop a cigarette butt. When he did, they'd sift through the remains, looking for significance. The scary part is they'd find it - and it really would be significant."
In his long life, the star, who also plays the harmonica and keyboard, has won more than 11 Grammys, two Oscars and, because of the power of his lyrics, been nominated for the Nobel Literature Prize on a number of occasions.Posted on 24 May 2011 15:11 to category : Band / Celebrity News
