Björk has revealed details of her long-awaited seventh studio album Biophilia, which comes four years after her last release.

It marks a seminal moment in the career of the irreverent Icelandic musician as for the first time in her life she has no record company to please. She has had free creative control over this record.

The songstress told Rolling Stone magazine that it was exciting to be in this position, comparing her liberation from record company constraints to Radiohead's self-released album In Rainbows.

Along with the new album, Björk is seeking to push the new musical frontier even further with live performances that use high-tech music software and entertainment systems, an updated website, a new documentary and a range of interactive iPad apps.

She told the magazine: "I think I'm probably semi-autistic or something – I'm just obsessed with riddles. It felt like the music industry was off the grid, and I wanted to solve the riddle."

The album has been inspired by her interest in science, which she fell in love with as a child.

At school her favourite subject was not music but maths and David Attenborough was her rock star.

The song Crystalline is the first release from the new album, which is yet to have a release date.
