Berry Gordy Jnr to invest $100 million into musical about his life
Berry Gordy Jnr, the founder of Motown, is putting a massive $100 million (£610,000) into a Broadway musical about his own life.
Gordy, 81, has lived through some of the most seminal moments of African-American history in the 20th century, and having created one of the most iconic labels in the music industry, will have a lavish story to tell, reported the New York Post.
It has been reported that he has been working with Kevin McCollum, the producer of Rent, and Doug Morris, the former chief executive officer of Universal Music.
A source told the newspaper: "Berry's been wanting to do this for a long time. He's got the money and investors lined up. He's trying to involve Diana Ross and Smokey Robinson."
It is believed that the musical will make full use of the back catalogue of Motown classics from musicians like Marvin Gaye, Diano Ross & The Supremes, The Temptations and Four Tops, as Gordy still owns much of the music.
Before he created Motown, Gordy had been a professional boxer. When he was drafted to fight in the Korean War his dreams of becoming a champion boxer came to an end. He went on to launch Motown in 1959 with a loan from his father.
