Bernard Greenhouse's "soul mate" cello to be sold
Greenhouse's cello, which is said to be one of only 60 classic instruments of its kind left in the world, is known as The Countess of Stanlein.
It is approximately 300-years-old and worth an estimated $6 million (approximately £3.9 million).
"It was a decision that was long in coming, so I've had time to prepare for it," his daughter Elena Delbanco told NPR.
"The instrument, as you know, has a certain value. And, of course, the government will be interested in the taxes for it; and that in itself would probably be more than we could muster, if we decided to keep it."
In another interview, this time with the New York Times, Ms Delbanco went on to say how the cello was Greenhouse's "soul mate", which he could not bear being apart during his lifetime.
"I would like him, were he around, to think that we did the right thing and be happy where the cello went," she said.
"I would like it to be loved as much by its next owner as it was by my father."
