Barlow to appear on X Factor 2012
As well as describing the prospect of spotting a "superstar" as "very exciting," the singer has said "I'm thrilled to be back and really looking forward to working with The X Factor team again".
Barlow, a piano player, is a member of the band Take That, and has had hits with them including Everything Changes, Patience, Back for Good and The Flood. He has also enjoyed a solo career singing such numbers as Love Won't Wait and Forever Love.
On last year's X Factor he acted as a mentor to Marcus Collins, a singer who went on to have a number nine hit with a cover of Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes earlier this year.
"It's great to be able to confirm our first judge for this year's show," said Simon Cowell, who as an X Factor judge has mentored such acts as the boy band One Direction.
