BBC's Sound Of poll 'meaningless'

The chairman of the Association of Independent Music has called the BBC's Sound Of poll meaningless.
Jessie J has had an amazing year
The BBC's cult Sound Of list of up and coming music stars has been described as being completely meaningless by an industry expert.

Alison Wenham, chairman of the Association of Independent Music, described it as irrelevant, imprecise and lacking in influence.

Speaking to NME, she said: "I think it's very inconsequential because, even going back years, this list has not proven to be particularly accurate.

"The independents will do what they do, and I'm not all that bothered about these sorts of polls."

Ms Wenham added that she thought the BBC's list had nothing to do with music, describing it as a "list of product placements for the year coming".

Her comments pick up on the touchy fact that only one of the acts on the 2012 longlist is from an independent label

However, critics have been quick to point out the poll's success with artists like Adele, Little Boots, Ellie Goulding and Jessie J going on to have massive commercial success.

After a two-year break, Little Boots returned to the music scene in Novemeber with her comeback track Shake.

The star, whose real name is Victoria Hesketh, has been working on her second studio album since rocketing to fame in 2009.
