BBC Proms a special occasion for one piano player in particular
The launch of this year's BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall this evening (July 15th) will be a very special day for one piano player.
When Benjamin Grosvenor sits down at the piano with his fingers hovering over the keys he will become the youngest pianist to have ever performed in the Proms' 116-year history.
At 19, Mr Grosvenor is already something of a prodigy, likened to China's Lang Lang in his technical abilities and his rapid ascent as a pianist.
He first came to public attention in 2004, when, aged just 11, he won the piano section of the BBC Young Musician of the Year.
Much has been said of the fact that he is British, reflecting that the UK has not produced a natural born pianist for a long time.
There was even more excitement when he was snapped up by the esteemed Decca label, making him the first British pianist to sign with them in over 60 years.
Still very much down-to-earth, Mr Grosvenor still lives at home in Southend-on-Sea, sharing a bedroom with his brother James.
He is currently a student at the Royal Academy of Music.
