Aretha Franklin cancels shows

Aretha Franklin has been forced to cancel two shows after breaking her ribs in a fall.
The legendary soul singer - who was due to take to the stage in Brooklyn, New York, for the free concerts on Monday (02.08.10) and Thursday - had to axe the performances after the incident on Sunday (01.08.10), which left her with severe abdominal pain.
Doctors have now advised the 'Respect' hitmaker to undergo tests before performing again, but the 68-year-old star is said to be in the process of rescheduling the cancelled gigs for later in the month.
Brooklyn Borough president Marty Markowitz said in a statement: "All of Brooklyn wishes Aretha Franklin a speedy recovery. Certainly thousands of music lovers were eagerly awaiting these historic shows, her first ever in Brooklyn, in the heart of our African-American community in Central Brooklyn and in world-famous Coney Island.
"Believe me, for the more than 30 years that I have been presenting free concerts here, Ms. Franklin has been at the top of my wish list, and that dream was about to come true. We hope to reschedule with her when she's feeling better - and we Brooklynites will be thrilled to welcome the Queen of Soul to the County of Kings."
Aretha has confirmed she is "looking forward" to being able to perform in Brooklyn once she has recovered from the incident.
She said: "(I am) very much looking forward to being in Brooklyn and having a foot-long hot dog at Coney Island."
