The Arctic Monkeys are casting themselves as a group of musicians at the forefront of protecting guitar music.

The Sheffield-based rockers have said that they feel it is their responsibility as stars to keep guitar music "alive" and relevant to what people are listening to.

Responding to a question from Shortlist about whether the band thought guitar music was experiencing a downturn, Alex Turner, frontman and electric guitar player, said: "Definitely.

But that's all the more reason for us to play at V Festival and be right in the middle of all that. It will come back around."

He added that the band were often asked why they chose to release Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair. Some thought it wasn't pop enough.

Turner said: "Because we've got that fan base and we're one of the guitar bands that have a shot of getting on the radio in the daytime, I almost feel like it's our job to put that sort of tune out."

The band are headlining the V Festival this weekend (August 20th), which will also see performances from the Manic Street Preachers, Primal Scream and the Kaiser Chiefs.
