Arcade Fire win Album of the Year accolade
Arcade Fire's third record The Suburbs has been handed the title of BBC 6 Music's Album of the Year.
The Suburbs - a concept record about growing up in a small town and a reflection on adulthood - has won consistent praise from critics and fans since its release earlier in 2010, with Q magazine declaring it as a "masterpiece".
It built on the success of previous LPs Funeral and Neon Bible to take the number one spot in the album charts in both the US and the UK.
Win Butler from the band said Arcade Fire appreciate their current level of success, noting that it took The Cure around seven albums to achieve similar levels of recognition.
"It's good to keep that in perspective in the band. But on this record we've felt comfortable in our own skin, which wasn't always the case in the past," he said.
The electric guitar player explained that one of his top moments of the year had been prior to the release of The Suburbs when music critic Robert Hillburn compared to the anticipation for the release of their record to the feeling when a new Beatles album was due to come out.
