American Idol names victor
The crooner, who plays the guitar, follows in the footsteps of the likes of American Idol's first winner, Mr Know It All singer Kelly Clarkson.
The news came shortly after it was reported that Cheryl Cole might be involved in an upcoming season of the show, which used to be judged by her one-time The X Factor colleague, Simon Cowell.
Cole, who used to appear on The X Factor, was rumoured to have been asked to go back to talent show judging by appearing on Idol, shown on these shores on ITV 2. However, this has been denied by a spokesperson for the songstress, according to The Daily Star.
The format will be familiar to UK audiences because it appeared on this country's screens as Pop Idol. Will Young (Leave Right Now, Your Game) won the first series of that show back in 2002, with Gareth Gates coming second.
