Alt-J scoop 2012 Mercury Music Prize
The band were presented with the award by radio and TV presenter by Lauren Laverne on Thursday night (November 1st), and were notably shocked when their name was called to claim the accolade.
Bookmakers had been touting the Leeds indie group from the very start, but they still had to beat off stiff competition from the likes of Plan B, The Maccabees, Richard Hawley and Django Django to scoop the accolade.
"We might just thank everyone in team Alt-J who has ever made a difference to us. And our parents... thanks for not making us get jobs!" the band said when they were accepting their award.
Alt-J formed in 2007 when all four members met while studying at Leeds University, and they have received critical acclaim for their debut album An Awesome Wave which was released in May 2012.
They are currently in the middle of a sold-out tour ending at Camden's Electric Ballroom on November 5th.
