Academic bemoans 'music being used like a weapon'
Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Simon Warner commented that he "[found] the idea of music being used like a weapon a little bit sad."
Music lecturer Mr Warner was speaking in response to the forthcoming introduction of recorded classical tracks at Leeds City Bus Station, the paper reports.
The Post quote a spokesman for the local transport authority saying that such music has been demonstrated to successfully prevent lingerers close to the doors of the bus station.
Although the piece makes clear that this is not the sole reason for its introduction, it also suggests that classical tracks have been chosen because they could potentially encourage lingering 'yobs' to exit the area.
Although he expresses regret over the idea of an art form as potentially 'positive' as music being implemented to manage people's actions, Mr Warner does add that perhaps these sorts of intervention could be acceptable provided they were successful in their aims.
The paper lists the likes of Handel (1685-1759) and Beethoven (1770-1827) as being prepared for play at the station.
