40 Steinway pianos feature in Leeds College concert
Forty musicians simultaneously struck a chord on the music instruments as part of a performance of Terry Riley's In C to celebrate the new fleet of pianos which mean that the college is the first music school in England to boast All Steinway Status, putting it alongside the likes of the acclaimed Julliard School in New York.
Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds College of Music principal Philip Meaden said: “We have been anticipating the arrival of our new fleet of Steinway pianos for a number of months now so it’s spectacular to see them all in the same room and being played together."
In total, 54 upright and grand pianos have been delivered to the college, five of which were handpicked during a trip to the Steinway and Sons factory in Hamburg, Germany.
It was recently reported that the University of Wolverhampton has bought 15 new Steinway pianos for its new performing arts centre.
A number of other educational institutions in the UK boast All Steinway Status, including the University on Wolverhampton and Wellington School in Somerset.
