21-year-old violin player wins inaugural Michael Measures Prize
A 21-year-old violin player from Montreal has been announced as the winner of the inaugural Michael Measures Prize that recognises up-and-coming young Canadian musicians.
Benedicte Lauziere will be handed a $15,000 (£9,400) cheque and be presented with her award by the Canada Council for the Arts and the National Youth Orchestra of Canada (NYOC), reported CBC News.
The executive director of NYOC, Barbara Smith, described the aspiring musician as "one of the most promising string players in the country".
She added that she expected Lauziere, who is currently studying at Schulich School of Music at McGill University in Montreal, to rise up the ranks quickly and make a huge impact on the world of classical music.
Lauziere first started playing the music instrument at five.
Such was her natural ability to command the violin, that by the age of ten, she had enrolled at the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal.
In other news, Adriane Post, the great-granddaughter of Dorothea Miller Post, is set to perform at her ancestral home on the same violin used nearly two-centuries ago.
