1783 Guadagnini violin to go under the hammer
Posted on 13 Oct 2011 09:16 to category : Instruments News

The violin was made by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini in Turin, Italy, and has been in Maazel's possession for over 66 years.
A precocious musician, Maazel not only started playing the violin from the age of five but was conducting orchestras from the age of eight.
Maazel, who is currently music director of the Munich Philharmonic, said: "I first played this Guadagnini when I was 15, and it has been my close companion ever since. We are especially happy that proceeds of its sale will go toward enabling young instrumentalists, singers and conductors to develop their professional careers."
All proceeds from the sale of the historic violin will go towards a fund for young artistic development. It is being overseen by Tarisio, one of the world's leading sources of fine and rare stringed instruments.
Jason Price, Tarisio's director, said: "This is a true musician’s violin, destined to inspire and delight audiences for generations to come. We're very pleased and honoured to sell such an exceptional and important instrument for the benefit of the Castleton Festival."
