You are here: Orchestral > Woodwind Instruments > Oboe | ||
The Oboe is a member of the woodwind family and is a double-reeded instrument. The Oboe features a conical bore, which helps to define the instrument's unique timbre. The tone is clear and crisp - its voice cuts right through the orchestra. The Oboe is a versatile instrument - it can sound melancholy, menacing, or bright and humorous. It is used throughout classical music, famous as a Baroque instrument, from George Handel's Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, to the Concerto for Oboe and strings by Ralph Vaughn Williams. It is also used effectively by many film composers for the variety of moods it can produce, such as Howard Shore's soundtrack to the film The Lord of the Rings. The Oboe plays in C and has an expansive range from the Bb just below middle C, through 4 octaves up to a high C#. |
