Doepfer A-118 Noise / Random

Details
The Doepfer A-118 Noise / Random module generates random voltages and noise. With three available signal types, the A-118 can provide you with random voltage, white noise, or coloured noise. The noise signals are generated through the amplification of transistor noise, making them completely analog, and can be used as audio sources, or as control voltages with a sample and hold module. The module allows you to mix different amounts of noise frequencies prior to being output via the coloured noise socket with the Red (low-frequency) and Blue (high-frequency) controls. The random voltage signal can be used for voltage control, with incredibly useful low-frequency content. You can also adjust the rate and amplitude of the random voltage, with two indication LEDs to give you visual feedback with regards to the state of the voltage at any one time.

Controls

  • Blue: Control knob for adjusting the high frequency content in the signal at the Coloured noise output
  • Red: Control Knob for adjusting the low frequency content in the signal at the Coloured noise output
  • Rate: Adjusts the cycle time T of the random voltage at the Random Output. T is a theoretical figure, because of the random voltages the module produces. In practice, a setting of 0 on the knob means fast changes in voltage, producing a spectrum similar to pink noise, whilst 10 means slow changes
  • Level: Controls the amplitude of the signal at the Random Output
  • Random Control: Two LEDs that keep track of whether the random voltage is either positive (+) or negative (-) at any one time. Their relative brightness also displays the amplitude

Inputs/Outputs

  • White: Output socket for White Noise
  • Coloured: Output socket for Coloured Noise, with a user-defined spectrum dependent on the position of the Red and Blue controls
  • Random Output: Output socket for Random Voltage, with user-defined rate of change and amplitude dependent on the position of the Rate and Level controls

Specifications

  • Width: 8HP / 40.3mm
  • Depth: 40mm (Measured from the rear side of the front panel)
  • Current:
    • +12V: +20mA
    • -12V: -10mA
