A Legendary Pedal Reborn

Back when Maxon created components and pedals for other companies, they produced the TS-9 tube screamer that went on to be a foundation in creating the historic rock and roll guitar sound. Now that Maxon are focused on producing their own pedals, they decided to produce their version of the famous TS-9 tube screamer. Using the original circuitry that was featured in the original, the OD-9 produces an ultra-smooth, creamy, dynamic overdrive with true bypass switching and easy to use controls. The hi boost/cut control can be used to dial in the amount of brightness the pedal produces, going from a warm, smooth sound to a sizzling hot overdriven tone.

The Original Circuitry

To create the OD-9, Maxon used the old circuitry from the TS-9 tube screamer to ensure they could reproduce the same legendary tones. The original OD-9 (TS-9) circuit is at the heart of the pedal, along with the PC board that Maxon has been using for the past 30+ years, complete with empty slots where the FET switching circuit has been left out. The absence of the FET switching circuit provides the pedal with extra output and a slightly open sound that’s perfect for creating classic rock tones. An NJM (JRC) 4558D Op Amp is also used in the OD-9’s design, providing a smoother sound with less compression then other Op Amp to ensure that Maxon can create an authentic TS sound.

About Maxon

Maxon started out in Japan in 1965 under the name Nisshin Onpa, manufacturing guitar pickups before producing OEM products for other companies. Nisshin Onpa was responsible for designing and manufacturing many legendary pedals while working in partnership with Ibanez, including the TS-808/TS808 and TS9 tube screamers. Although many of the pedals Maxon created were released under the Ibanez name, Maxon was producing pedals under their own name, and in 2002 when the two companies parted way, Maxon began to push its name as a manufacturer of high-quality effects pedals. Today Maxon produce "hard-to-find" vintage type effects pedals, and are used by many artists such as Pearl Jam, Troy Van Leeuwen, Steve Stevens, Brad Whitford, and many more.
