12-String Acoustic Guitars

The 12-String Guitar is similar to the standard 6-String Guitar, but has an extra 6 strings that are tuned in unison, usually one octave higher than its standard counterpart.

The 12-String has a richer, more complex tone that the 6-String and often produces a natural chorus effect when played. Notable users include Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins), Peter Buck (R.E.M) and Neil young.

The method to playing a 12-String is very similar to playing a standard 6-String, but requires the player to press down two strings with each finger. This is fairly easy to grasp given that the corresponding strings are only a few millimetres apart and as a result of being an octave higher, they are also thinner. Unlike the other 5 strings, the top-E string often is a duplicate string that exists at exactly the same pitch as the standard top-E.
